Synthetic

Synthetic hair fiber is man-made and varies in quality from manufacturer to manufacturer. It is widely assumed that synthetic fiber is low quality and feels like Barbie doll hair. This is true when you’re paying $30 for a synthetic hairpiece but there are reputable companies who make amazing synthetic hair that you won’t believe isn’t real. Those are the companies we have relationships with and offer their products in our stores.

It is very low maintenance… totally wash and wear. The style is permanent and goes right back into place after washings. The synthetic fiber is sensitive to heat therefore you cannot style it with a blow dryer, curling iron or flat iron. You also must be cautious when cooking and even more so when using an oven.

When shopping our synthetic products keep in mind the style is preset. It’s important to choose a style that will work for you because it will always look that way and you cannot change it.

Heat Defiant (HD)

Heat Defiant (HD) fiber aka Heat Friendly fiber is synthetic but is made differently than traditional synthetic. What’s the difference? It can handle heat! You can curl it and use a flat iron on it to create different styles to suit your mood.

It is kind of “wash and wear hair” but not totally. You DO need to style it with a heat tool somewhat regularly in order to keep the hair fiber healthy but you don’t need to do it every day. HD fiber has fantastic style memory which means once you style it you’ll be able to wear it several times before needing to freshen up the fibers with heat again.

It is very important to treat your HD hairpiece well. Do not force out any tangles… use only a wide tooth comb with gentle hands. Apply heat to maintain the integrity of the hair fiber. And use a detangler spray after each wear to keep the hair tangle-free.

Human Hair / HD Blend

Human Hair (HH) hairpieces can be expensive and often out of the budget for many people. Take a look at our HH/HD blends. Some manufacturers create wigs and toppers with both human hair and HD fiber to give wearers the softness of human hair but at a lower price tag.

A big benefit of HH/HD blends is that the HD fiber has style memory which helps maintain the style of your hairpiece even through washings! You’ll find your curls or waves will stay longer in your HH/HD blends than they would in a full human hair hairpiece.

We recommend styling your HH/HD blend hairpiece but just know that it doesn’t require as much upkeep as a 100% HD or 100% HH hairpiece.

Human Hair

Human Hair (HH) hairpieces can be expensive but they’re worth every penny. Though synthetic fiber is pretty impressive it cannot beat the look and feel of real human hair. Beware of wigs being sold for a fraction of what they normally cost. It’s a scam and they are everywhere…. Facebook, eBay, Amazon and even some websites that appear legitimate. Trust your gut when it seems too good to be true.

If you can afford a quality HH hairpiece you will not be disappointed. They offer incredible styling options which is great if you’re someone who knows how to play with hair. If you’re not real skilled with using heat tools you may want to consider a different hair fiber or plan to bring your hairpiece to a wig shop to be styled professionally.

If you have zero ability to style your hairpiece and don’t have a wig shop nearby we recommend synthetic fiber as the best fit for you.

Features

Hairpieces can be constructed in different ways that directly impact how believable and how comfortable it is. A basic construction will usually look less realistic than a wig with special features. Also, a wig made by a low quality manufacturer will look cheap no matter what features it has. We carry products only from companies that we respect and trust.

1) Basic Construction: completely machine made, no special features, least expensive.

2) Lace Front: located at the front of the wig along the hairline, creates a very realistic hairline as opposed to seeing the front of the wig cap.

3) Monofilament: can be located at just the crown, just the part, or across the entire top of the hairpiece creating the appearance of your scalp.

4) Hand-Tied: instead of being machine made the hair fibers are manually tied into the material by a person resulting in realistic movement of the hair and a very comfortable fit.

Wig Sizes

On our site we have used these letters to indicate the sizes: A=average, P=petite, P/A= petite/average and L=large. Since manufacturers create their own unique products the exact sizing varies between them but in general these are the size categories they follow.

If you don’t know what size you are go to the FAQ section and follow the detailed instructions to measure your head. This will give you an approximate size to shop for but if you need help please call our Thorp store (715) 669-6500.

Wig vs. Topper

A wig will cover your head and give you a full head of hair on its own. You can choose any style or color that looks good on you with no regard to the style or color of your biological hair.

A topper sits on top of your head and clips into your own hair which then gives you a full head of hair. You must choose a style, length and color that compliments your biological hair so they blend and look natural together.

If you have no biological hair or very little of it we suggest you look at wigs. If you have thinning hair but there is enough of it for a topper to clip into you might want to take a look at toppers. This can be a bit tricky so please feel welcome to call us for help. (715) 669-6500.
